Alangu Movie Review: Alangu, directed by SP Shakthivel, is a revenge drama that impresses with its direction, despite a simple storyline. The film sets up a gripping world from the very beginning, pulling the audience into its conflict. The story follows a group of young men from a rural Tamil Nadu village who, after taking up menial jobs in Kerala, get caught in a dangerous situation.
Dharma (Gunanidhi), a naive young man, adopts a neglected dog, and the bond they form becomes central to the plot. His life takes a dramatic turn when an incident involving his dog angers Augustine (Chemban Vinod), a powerful politician. Augustine orders his men to kill all the dogs in the area, and Dharma, along with his friends, must fight back to protect their beloved pet. The story becomes a battle of survival against Augustine’s powerful network.
The screenplay, while occasionally predictable, does have enough intense moments to keep the audience engaged. Gunanidhi’s performance as Dharma is one of the film’s strong points—his relationship with his family, friends, and the dog feels real and relatable. The tension builds effectively, particularly during the cat-and-mouse game between Dharma’s group and Augustine’s goons.
S Pandikumar’s visuals complement the film well, enhancing the mood and atmosphere. Sarath Appani brings intensity to his role as Philip, Augustine’s ruthless henchman. Kaali Venkat and Regin Rose also leave a mark in their brief appearances.
The background score by Ajesh adds to the film’s tension, while the fast-paced editing by San Lokesh and the intense action choreography by Dinesh Kasi give weight to crucial scenes. However, some of the more graphic scenes feel unnecessary for a U/A rating. Chemban Vinod’s character, though important, feels underdeveloped, especially given the buildup surrounding his role. A stronger, more engaging climax could have taken the film to another level. Still, the film stays true to its ‘man vs dog’ theme, stirring the right emotions.
